Tasmania's Government House, the official residence of the state's Governor, sits on 15 hectares of land overlooking the Derwent River. Government House is known as one of the great Vice-Regal residences across the Commonwealth and hosts a wide range of guests and dignitaries.  

We are looking for a passionate and dedicated Horticulture Trainee to join our Grounds Maintenance team in a full-time capacity. Our Grounds Maintenance team work across a variety of roles across the estate. In this role, you'll be working with the team to assist our Horticulturalists in all areas of garden maintenance, Including, but not limited to;

  • Assist with the maintenance of ornamental garden beds, weeding, planting, pest & disease control, pruning, mulching, and fertilising.
  • Assist with turf maintenance, mowing, brush cutting, turf renovation, fertilising, weed control, pest & disease control.
  • Assist with the production of food and cut flowers, seed sowing, propagation, seasonal planting, weeding, pest & disease control, pruning, mulching, fertilising and harvesting.
  • Assist with the operation, maintenance, and installation of irrigation systems.
  • Assist with the maintenance of garden hedges, tennis courts and bowling greens
  • Assist with the maintenance of Estate vineyard, seasonal vine maintenance, pruning, and harvesting.
  • With supervision and appropriate training, operate and maintain small machinery, power and hand tools.

The ideal candidate will have a genuine passion for gardens and horticulture, and additionally bring to the role

  • Good physical fitness (the role will include significant walking distances including hilly areas)
  • Well-presented, polite and friendly
  • Ability to work professionally and cooperatively in a close team environment
  • Workplace discretion in matters relating to the Office of the Governor Tasmania (including being able to pass a National Police Check)
  • Ideally some prior experience in a grounds, landscaping or garden environment, or completion of a Certificate II or higher in Horticulture
