Why now is the right time to take on an adult apprentice or trainee

1 July, 2020

When you're looking for a new apprentice or trainee, your first thought is probably to look for someone just out of school. But have you considered the value of taking on an adult apprentice or trainee?

Adult apprentices and trainees are generally looking to change careers, re-enter the workforce or formalise their skills so taking on an older apprentice or trainee can be beneficial to building a dynamic team, utilising their existing life skills and work experience.

What's more, by hiring and signing up an adult apprentice, you may be eligible for the Support for Adult Australian Apprentices incentive, designed to create more opportunities for job seekers and industry.

Put simply, taking on an adult apprentice could earn your business $4,000...

The $4,000 Support for Adult Australian Apprentices (SAAA) incentive will be paid to employers who hire and sign up eligible Australian Apprentices:

  • Aged 21 and over when they commence their Australian Apprenticeship, and
  • Undertaking a Certificate III or IV level qualification identified on the National Skills Needs List
  • Receiving an actual wage at the date of commencement which is equal to or greater than the National Minimum Wage, currently $20.33 per hour or $772.60 per week (before tax).

Can't find your industry on the National Skills Needs List? You may still be eligible for other Government financial incentives available when you hire and sign up an apprentice or trainee.
