MEGT’s first cohort of trainees have completed the Defence Industry Pathways Program.
A total of twenty-six trainees qualified for a Certificate III in Defence Industry Pathways after a year undertaking the Program, which features a balance of formal study and real workplace exposure within the defence industry supply chain.
The program is an initiative of the Australian government and Perth’s South Metropolitan TAFE, in collaboration with MEGT.
Trainees were selected after a comprehensive recruitment process to assess their suitability, including motivations and ‘soft skills’, which helped to create a diverse pool of highly motivated participants.
Each paid traineeship provided valuable hands-on experience and education in a range of roles within the maritime defence industry, including manufacturing and engineering, computing, logistics, procurement and technical and computer aided drawing.
Work placement blocks were undertaken with host employers within the defence industry, complimented by on-campus study at South Metro TAFE (Fremantle campus).
There have been a total of 152 trainees engaged in the Defence Industry Pathways Program since April 2024.
Trainee Ryan said he enjoys getting ongoing, active support and guidance from professionals in the field who are dedicated to nurturing the next generation of workers.
“The support we’ve received from TAFE, MEGT and all the employers and hosts has been wonderful”, Ryan said. “I’ve made some lifelong friendships with people I never would have spoken to outside of this course”.
