How an extra pair of hands can help your business AND keep TAS students in school

15 April, 2019

Did you know – Tasmanian high school students are less likely to complete Year 12 compared to students in other states?

That’s right – a recent study has shown that the Year 12 retention rate of secondary students in Tasmania is 10% below the national average*. This means students in TAS might be missing out on the valuable skills and education they need to enter the workforce on the right foot.

But there’s something you can do to help young people get ahead (while building your business at the same time)…

Take on a school-based apprentice or trainee!

By taking on a school-based apprentice or trainee, you’ll give secondary school students the opportunity to learn your business on-the-job, with your team, while working towards a nationally accredited qualification – all while they complete their schooling!

With time away from the classroom and the opportunity to make a wage all part of the deal, a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship might just be what a disengaged student needs to see their schooling through and take steps towards their future career.

What’s in it for you?

It’s not all about our students – you can benefit too by:

  • Saving money – school-based apprentices and trainees work part-time, which means less money spent on wages and more to invest in your business.
  • Filling skills gaps – not only will you get an extra set of hands on deck, you’ll be able to ensure your new starter learns your business your way – that way, they can fill any gaps in your team.
  • Financial incentives – you might be eligible for financial support when you hire a school-based apprentice or trainee. And if you need help – chat with us
  • Up-to-date industry knowledge – your school-based apprentice or trainee will undertake a nationally accredited qualification, so you know their training will be relevant to your industry and ready to apply to the workplace.
