Darcy gives his career a kickstart

8 September, 2017

When MEGT apprentice Darcy Meehan was in Year 10, he was signed into a school-based traineeship, undertaking Certificate III in Agriculture on his family’s property – Timvale Cattle Company – in Charters Towers, North Queensland.

Now in Year 11 – only 14 months later – Darcy has already completed his traineeship and is now taking the next step in his career.

Keen to pursue his passion for carpentry, and following advice from his local MEGT consultant, Darcy used his All Souls St Gabriels School work experience program to gain on-the-job experience with Martin Locke Homes, Townsville.

The company was so impressed with him that they offered him a school-based carpentry apprenticeship which Darcy commenced this year – only three months after completing his agriculture qualification!

Darcy will now travel to Townsville every Friday to work with Martin Locke Homes while he completes his secondary schooling. Once he’s finished Year 12, he has plans to continue working full-time with Martin Locke Homes.

This is a fantastic achievement for Darcy, especially coming from a small town where it can be tough to land an apprenticeship.

Darcy not only put in the hard yards to complete his agriculture traineeship while he was still at school, but he then used his initiative and work ethic to obtain a carpentry apprenticeship.

We’re sure with this kind of drive and dedication Darcy will go far!
