Meet Michael , one of our talented apprentices in his third year of an Electronics and Communications apprenticeship. We sat down to ask him a few questions about why he chose an apprenticeship, how it is going and how he is achieving his career goals.
What made you choose your apprenticeship?
Before my apprenticeship, I was a bartender, and each day felt the same and I became stagnant, I was lacking purpose and a challenge at work. This job sounded like a breath of fresh air, and I immediately applied. Each day is a challenge, and each challenge being different to the previous one. More importantly, it’s fun and engaging. I am really enjoying myself.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
Each day is different and the variety keeps me on my toes which I enjoy. Also, I am privileged to be able to work with a vast amount of equipment and learn from experienced technicians. I am constantly learning and growing, which is what I wanted in my career.
Are you finding anything difficult about your role?
The most challenging aspect of my job is firstly trying to learn as much as I can, as there is so much to learn. I try to keep our customers happy and it’s sometimes harder than it sounds because if something is broken it must be fixed immediately. To mitigate this, learning how to build good relationships with staff and customers is crucial and a good challenge.
What are your top 3 three goals to meet this year?
1. To continually take initiative at work and also outside of work
2. To take on harder jobs even if I am not entirely confident on the specific job
3. To become more independent within my workplace and take on more responsibility
What’s your favourite thing to do after work or on the weekend?
I usually head straight to the gym or go for a run. I am currently training for my second marathon, so I spend a lot of time running throughout the week.
Thanks for your time, Michael and good luck in your final year.
