Apprenticeships build real life employability skills

Becoming an apprentice or trainee is a terrific way to combine paid work and structured training with a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) or Nominated Training Organisation (NTO) as a pathway toward gaining a nationally-recognised qualification.

What’s involved in an apprenticeship or traineeship?

Australian Apprenticeships combine a formal qualification with paid employment. They are available in a variety of Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualification levels.

There are many occupations available in a wide range of industries, including exciting opportunities in both traditional trades and future-focused careers like clean energy. An apprenticeship or traineeship can be full-time, part-time or school-based (combining school class time and on-the-job learning).

What’s the difference between an Apprenticeship and Traineeship?

Apprenticeships generally last between three and four years, depending on the qualification. Typical examples are construction-related trades like builders, plumbers, electricians and roof tilers, along with commercial cookery, hairdressing, automotive, engineering, manufacturing and more.

Traineeships can last from one to two years, again depending on the qualification. Traineeships can be in areas such as business, Information Technology, retail, community health, childcare, beauty, financial services and more.

Am I eligible to become an apprentice or trainee?
  • Minimum age of 15 (with consent of a parent or guardian)
  • Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or have full working rights.
How much do I get paid?

This depends on the agreement, award or legislation you’re covered by with your employer. If you’re not sure which one applies to you, the Fair Work Ombudsman’s Pay and Conditions Tool (PACT) is here to help or call Fair Work on 13 13 94.

"You can get hired straightaway after an apprenticeship". Apprentice

"Many apprenticeships follow on to become a full-time job as a certified tradesman with the same company that the apprenticeship was done with." Clean Energy Apprentice
