Learner Driver Programs across Australia

Across Australia, there are several free and paid learner driver programs that are helping Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth get their licenses and get on the road. These programs open opportunities for employment, education, and independence. Check out the list of programs below, based on location. 

New South Wales, ACT, Queensland, Victoria, WA (Kalgoorlie) 

One standout initiative is Drive for Life, run by The Salvation Army. This free program supports participants aged 16–25y.o. and operates across 14 sites along the eastern seaboard. It offers driving lessons, road safety education, and one-on-one mentoring, helping young people build confidence and prepare for life on the road. Find out more about the Drive for Life program

Northern NSW and South-East Queensland 

Another initiative is the Aboriginal Driver Education Program by ACE community Colleges. This program offers up to 10 free driving lessons for learners in regional and areas of northern New South Wales and Southern Queensland. Find out more about ACE Community Colleges Driver Education Program

South Australia 

On the Right Track is a service to help Aboriginal people who live in the APY and MT get their driver’s licence.  Learn about On the Right Track.

New South Wales 

Birrang Driver Licence Access Program (DLAP) is designed to provide support for Australians that face difficulties getting their license, including people in Aboriginal communities. 

Queensland

PCYC QLD’s program, Braking the Cycle is a program to support young drivers in completing their 100 mandatory hours of driving in a safe vehicle with the help of a volunteer mentor. 

The Indigenous Driver Licensing Program gives First Nations peoples in remote Queensland communities the opportunity to get their driver licence and learn safe road use behaviours. 

Western Australia

Driving Force Academy is a program run by Western Australian based organisation Desire to Aspire that supports First Nations youth in gaining both their learners and full license through the academy.
