Key Apprenticeship Program driving workforce growth in housing and clean energy
Australia’s push to build more homes and transition to a clean energy future is accelerating, and employers have a critical role to play.
Recent government updates show strong early momentum for the Key Apprenticeship Program (KAP), with more than 11,000 apprentices commencing in housing construction trades within the first six months of the program’s launch. The initiative is designed to strengthen Australia’s skilled workforce in priority areas and support employers to take on new apprentices.
Supporting employers to build the workforce of the future
The Key Apprenticeship Program provides targeted financial support to employers hiring apprentices in occupations aligned with national priorities, particularly housing construction and clean energy roles listed on the Australian Apprenticeship Priority List.
For eligible employers, the program offers:
- Up to $5,000 for full-time apprentices
- Up to $2,500 for part-time apprentices
These payments are focused on supporting the first year of an apprenticeship, helping businesses manage upfront costs and invest in long-term workforce development.
To be eligible, employers must be able to demonstrate engagement with construction or clean energy activities and provide apprentices with meaningful, hands-on experience in these areas.
Building capability in clean energy
A key component of KAP is the New Energy Apprenticeship stream, which supports apprentices entering clean energy careers.
This includes roles involved in:
- Designing and building renewable energy infrastructure
- Installing and maintaining energy-efficient technologies
- Supporting the transition to low and zero-emissions systems
For example, an electrical apprentice may gain experience installing solar panels, EV battery systems or energy-efficient switchboards, building practical skills that are increasingly in demand across the industry.
Importantly, there is flexibility in how this experience is delivered, allowing employers to integrate clean energy exposure into their existing operations.
Supporting apprentices to start and succeed
Alongside employer incentives, eligible apprentices can receive up to $10,000 (full-time) or $5,000 (part-time) paid in instalments across their apprenticeship.
This support helps improve both commencement and completion rates, ensuring more apprentices successfully progress through training and into long-term employment.
Why it matters
With skills shortages continuing across key industries, the Key Apprenticeship Program offers a practical pathway for businesses to attract new talent, build job-ready skills aligned to industry needs, and strengthen long-term workforce capability. By supporting apprenticeships in housing construction and clean energy, employers can also contribute to national priorities while investing in their own future workforce.
