Coaching that builds capability: supporting apprentices for long-term success

For employers looking to take on apprentices, finding the right candidate is only part of the equation. Ongoing support, guidance and structure can make the difference between an apprentice who simply starts, and one who successfully completes and becomes a valuable long-term team member.

Through MEGT’s Recruitment and Management Services, coaching is a core part of the apprenticeship journey. We spoke with Industry Employment Consultants Kym Vanderplank (K) and Claire O’Malley (C) about the role coaching plays in supporting apprentices — and the impact it has on employers.

Why is coaching such an important part of supporting apprentices and trainees throughout their journey?

C: Coaching is critical because it’s not just about technical skills — it’s about developing the person as a whole. Apprentices and trainees need someone in their corner to help them navigate challenges, stay engaged and ultimately complete their qualification successfully.

I had a trainee who struggled with attendance and confidence early in their placement. Through regular site visits, we identified the root cause, put a plan in place, and worked closely with the host employer to support them. Within a few months, their attendance improved, their confidence grew, and they became a reliable member of the team.

What are the biggest challenges apprentices face, and how does coaching help them stay on track and build workplace confidence?

K: Maintaining motivation over the full duration of training can be challenging. Early enthusiasm can fade as apprentices balance work and study, or when stress begins to show. Coaching helps keep them accountable, breaking goals into manageable steps and keeping them focused. It also provides a space to address challenges early.

We help young people to communicate more effectively and understand workplace expectations, which strengthens their relationships with supervisors and teams.

How does coaching support young peoples’ future planning while also delivering positive outcomes for employers?

C: Coaching encourages young people to think beyond just “getting through” their qualification. We work with them to set clear goals and understand career pathways and industry knowledge. This helps them stay motivated and gives them a sense of purpose, which is key to long term success and retention.

Not every supervisor has the time or tools to manage apprentices effectively. A dedicated coach provides structure and support to both the apprentice and the business.

K: Apprentices who feel supported are more likely to stay committed, perform consistently, and contribute positively to the workplace.

For example, I saw an apprentice who was struggling with attendance and confidence in the workplace. Through consistent coaching, goal-setting, and collaboration with the employer, the apprentice was able to rebuild confidence, improve communication, and get back on track. As a result, their performance improved significantly, and the employer retained a capable and motivated team member.

Why should employers consider partnering with MEGT?

C: Our coaching approach includes regular on-site visits every 6–10 weeks, where we work closely with apprentices and trainees to set clear, short-term goals for the period ahead. These structured check-ins create accountability and keep them focused on their progression. We take the time to identify any challenges they may be facing, helping them recognise where they might be falling short and providing practical, tailored strategies to improve. It’s also an opportunity to support host employers by updating supervisors on the latest regulatory and compliance requirements in their industry, and helping ensure safe, compliant work practices are consistently followed on site.

K: Partnering with MEGT means you’re not just hiring an apprentice — you’re gaining a structured support system that drives success. With dedicated coaching, ongoing guidance, and a focus on both personal and professional development, MEGT helps reduce risk, improve retention, and ultimately help businesses build a skilled, confident workforce for the future.
