Building stronger workforces through First Nations employment
Building a diverse workforce creates opportunities for businesses to strengthen capability, bring new perspectives into the workplace and support meaningful employment outcomes for First Nations Australians.
We spoke with National Operations Manager, Ciaran McCluskey, a Gamilaroi and Yugambeh man, about the benefits when businesses invest in First Nations apprentices and trainees and how MEGT helps employers build inclusive, supported workplaces through Group Training.
Why is creating employment opportunities for First Nations Australians so important for employers today?
Creating employment opportunities for First Nations Australians is about more than filling roles. It's about strengthening businesses while creating lasting social and economic outcomes.
First Nations employees bring unique perspectives, resilience and cultural knowledge that enrich workplaces and encourage innovation. For employers, investing in First Nations employment also demonstrates a genuine commitment to reconciliation while building a workforce that reflects the communities they serve.
Many employers want to build a more diverse workforce but aren't sure where to begin. What are some of the common barriers or concerns you hear?
We hear from so many employers that they want to do the right thing and aren't sure where to start. They often have questions about attracting First Nations candidates, creating culturally safe workplaces or what support is available if challenges arise.
MEGT supports employers every step of the way - from recruitment and onboarding through to ongoing coaching, mentoring and pastoral care. We provide practical advice, cultural awareness and regular communication, giving both employers and trainees the confidence to succeed.
What role does coaching and mentoring play in helping apprentices and trainees succeed?
Coaching and mentoring tailored to each individual is essential in helping trainees build their confidence and navigate the workplace. This is especially important in the first 90 days and is where our team focus on ensuring apprentices, and their supervisors, are set up for success. Our field teams provide regular guidance, help trainees overcome challenges and support them to stay focused on their career goals.
What benefits have employers experienced by employing First Nations apprentices and trainees?
Employers consistently tell us that First Nations apprentices and trainees bring commitment, fresh perspectives and a strong willingness to learn. Many also see improvements in workplace culture, collaboration and employee engagement.
Beyond the workplace, these partnerships help businesses strengthen community connections, demonstrate meaningful action towards reconciliation and enhance their reputation as an employer of choice.
Looking ahead, what opportunities do you see for employers who invest in more diverse workforces?
Businesses that embrace diversity today will be better positioned for the future. It's about more than meeting diversity targets; it's about developing a workforce that reflects modern Australia while creating stronger businesses and more prosperous communities.
With the right support, First Nations apprenticeships and traineeships can help businesses build diverse, capable workforces while creating meaningful career opportunities.
