Building skills, confidence and careers
There’s no single starting point for an apprenticeship or traineeship. For some people, an apprenticeship is a first step. For others, it represents a change in direction.
Across different industries and stages of life, these five apprentices are proof of how apprenticeships can help your career take shape.
Exploring his options changed Deon’s plans
In Far North Queensland, Deon had been considering leaving school. But after attending a school-based apprenticeship information session, Deon decided to explore a school-based apprenticeship and connected with local employer Friend Constructions.
He began his school-based carpentry apprenticeship this year and now plans to finish school before moving into it full-time.
“MEGT helped me connect with Friend Constructions and made it easy to start up my apprenticeship,” Deon said.
He’s now enjoying being on the tools, learning from his mentor and picking up something new each day.
Alysha discovered a career she didn’t know existed
Alysha recently completed her Certificate IV in Outdoor Leadership.

Now an Outdoor Education Team Leader, Alysha guides school groups through outdoor activities. These include canoeing, rock climbing and high ropes.
What started as responding to an ad for a job she didn’t know existed has now become a rewarding career.
Rewarding recognition for Phil
Working within Wamarra, an Indigenous-led civil construction organisation, gave proud Gunditjmara man, Phil, the opportunity to build his career in civil construction.
While completing his Certificate III in Civil Construction, Phil progressed from a labourer to a leading hand in just two years thanks to his leadership, ability to coordinate crews and solve problems.
It’s more than a job for Phil, with his goal “to show younger Aboriginal people that a strong future is achievable.”
Recently Phil was recognised for his dedication and leadership, winning the Koorie Student of the Year at the 2026 Victorian Training Awards.

“I’m grateful for the support I’ve already received and am looking forward to growing my skills, taking on more responsibility, and building a long-term career in aquaculture,” Raven said.
“I’m proud to be a woman stepping into a male-dominated trade and showing others that they can do it too.”
