Building digital capability through IT traineeships
As digital skills become increasingly important across every industry, IT traineeships are helping businesses build capability while developing the next generation of technology professionals. Through MEGT's Group Training service, employers can grow their workforce with the support and flexibility needed to develop future-ready talent.
We spoke with our Business Development Manager, Court South, and Industry Employment Consultant, Hanne Kovarik, about the opportunities in Australia's growing IT sector and why this pathway is becoming increasingly valuable for employers.
Why are IT traineeships becoming increasingly important for Australian businesses?
H: As technology becomes increasingly important across every industry, businesses need people with the right digital skills to support growth and innovation. IT traineeships provide a practical way to build capability while developing talent from the ground up.
Many people still think you need a university degree to work in IT. Why are traineeships such a valuable pathway into the industry?
C: One of the biggest misconceptions is that you need a university degree to build a career in IT. Traineeships offer a practical alternative, allowing people to earn while they learn, gain a nationally recognised qualification and build real workplace experience from day one.
For employers, it's an opportunity to develop motivated talent with the right attitude, while trainees build technical skills and contribute to the business from the outset.
How can IT trainees help businesses with day-to-day operations?
C: In my experience, trainees often become productive team members much earlier than employers expect. By supporting routine IT activities, they allow senior technical staff to focus on strategic projects and more complex technical challenges which also supports growth and innovation.
They also bring fresh perspectives, strong digital literacy, and enthusiasm for emerging technologies, which can contribute positively to innovation and continuous improvement within the organisation.
Technology is changing rapidly. How do IT traineeships help businesses future-proof their workforce?
C: IT traineeships help businesses build adaptable, future-ready workforces. By combining formal training with hands-on experience, trainees develop skills in current technologies while building a mindset of continuous learning.
For many employers, investing in traineeships is a long-term strategy that supports innovation, succession planning and sustainable growth.
What support do IT trainees receive throughout their traineeship?
H: One of the biggest advantages of MEGT's Group Training service is the network of support surrounding both the trainee and the employer.
Trainees receive formal training through a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), on-the-job coaching from their host employer, and ongoing support from a dedicated MEGT Field Officer. Regular check-ins help ensure trainees stay on track while providing guidance if personal or workplace challenges arise.
Since 2019, MEGT has:
- Placed more than 790 IT trainees with host employers across Australia.
- Supported over 500 trainees to successfully complete their IT qualification.
- Seen 60% of IT trainees continue working with their host employer after completing their traineeship.
These outcomes highlight the value of combining practical workplace experience with structured training and ongoing support – helping employers build skilled, job-ready teams while creating meaningful career pathways in one of Australia's fastest-growing industries.
