The way you dress and present yourself at work can have a huge impact on how people see you as well as how they view your employer, so it is important to make sure you always convey a professional image.
By showing that you care about how you present yourself, it will also show your employer that you care about your career.
Dress standards and policies will vary between professions and workplaces. Some industries will require clothing that meets safety requirements (such as construction trades) and others will not. In some cases, there may be a company policy about piercings, tattoos or hairstyles.
If you are unsure what the dress code is at your work, ask your employer.
Regardless of the company policy, the following tips will help you to always make the right impression:
- No matter the industry or your personal style, always try to be neat, clean and presentable – personal hygiene is essential!
- Consider your role and your tasks – e.g. will you be spending a lot of time on your feet? Make sure you wear comfortable shoes. The more comfortable you are, the more confident you will be and the easier your daily tasks will be.
Remember comfortable doesn’t mean casual! You still need to follow your employer’s dress code.
