Minister announces review of incentives system

21 February, 2024

The Minister for Skills and Training, Brendan O’Connor, has announced a strategic review of the Australian Apprenticeships Incentives System.

To be led by The Honourable Justice Iain Ross AO and Ms Lisa Paul AO PSM, the review will investigate:

  • How the system and complementary services are performing in terms of the taking up and completion of apprenticeships and traineeships
  • The impact of cost-of-living pressures on apprentices and trainees
  • Best practices in terms of supporting high quality apprenticeships and traineeships, including government support, workplace conditions and culture, and employers
  • Whether the system is creating an environment which encourages women, First Nations peoples, people with disability and those in regional, rural and remote communities into apprenticeships and traineeships
  • How the system can be aligned priorities at outlined in the 2023 Employment White Paper, along with the broader economic objectives

While financial supports for apprentices and trainees are scheduled to change from 1 July 2024, this review will assist the government to implement a more effective, sustainable and long-term incentive system for apprentices and trainees.

Written submissions on matters raised in the Terms of Reference will be accepted before 15 May 2024.
