How do you get started?

  1. Decide what you are good at and what interests you.
  2. Talk to your school careers advisor, parents and friends about the careers that you could do in the area that interests you.
  3. Look at recruitment ads to see what skills are needed to different jobs.
  4. Talk to us and your school careers advisor about the training needed for that career. There is a comprehensive list on www.najobpathways.com.au and MEGT Group Training has a number of vacancies for positions.
  5. Your school careers advisor will help find an employer who would like to employ you as an Australian School-based Apprentice.
  6. And we know about some jobs available right now.

What you need to check

Towards the end of the year, students looking to exit school can commence their job seeking journey. At MEGT Group Training we are already seeing the most pro-active students applying for our vacancies and setting themselves up for employment after their exams.

Students wishing to access traineeships and apprenticeships would be wise to do some preparation and research prior to their application in order to maximise their chance of success. Some areas for preparation include:

Residency– Australian citizens, permanent residents and some visa holders are eligible to take up apprenticeship and traineeships in Australia. Students need to have their birth certificate or passport available when they attend interviews to demonstrate their ability to work.

Pre-requisitesApplicants need to check whether the industry they are applying for has specific pre-requisites. Some trade areas such as plumbing, electrical and carpentry at MEGT require a completed pre-apprenticeship in order to successfully gain an apprenticeship. All trades prefer applicants to have a car and licence.

Knowledge – students need to research their industry area and be able to demonstrate a realistic expectation of what the role will require of them.

A pro-active approach and some time spent in preparation will gain the best results for applicants and enable them to jump the queue!
